Hip protectors are devices designed to ease the impact of a fall on the hip bone and help prevent hip fractures. Patients and residents that benefit most from using hip protectors include elderly fall-risk individuals who are unsteady and have frequent falls, a history of fractures from falls, osteoporosis, and/or limitations of activity secondary to fear of falling.
Hip protectors act as shock absorbers around the hip, providing a cushion. Soft foam pads are held in place at the hips with specially designed garments. Secure hip protectors feature high-density foam hip pads and a removable tailbone protection pad.
The risk of hip fracture when falling while wearing hip protectors compared with a fall with no hip protector in place is significantly reduced. In addition, hip protectors offer psychological benefits (i.e., wearers feel more confident in completing tasks safely) and, as a result, become more physically active and require less assistance with activities of daily living.
Hip Fractures Among Older Adults
Hip fractures are among the most severe injuries resulting from falls. Recovery from a hip fracture is challenging and can cause individuals to lose their independence. As the population of the United States continues to age, the number of hip fractures is expected to increase.
- Each year, at least 250,000 people aged 65 and older are hospitalized for hip fractures.
- More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling, usually by falling sideways.
- Women experience three-quarters of all hip fractures.
- Women more often have osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones and makes them more likely to break.
- The chances of breaking your hip go up as you get older.
Secure hip protectors are lightweight and available in a variety of sizes to ensure proper fit. They also come in different colors to suit individual needs. The soft cotton blend garment material is comfortable for everyday use, and it helps to prevent fall-related hip injuries among the elderly, seniors, fall-risk patients, residents, and loved ones.
The best use of hip protectors is to protect those who are most at risk of hip fractures, such as seniors, and fall-risk patients:
-
- Elderly, Senior population
- Highly medicated
- Seizure disorder
- Balance impairment
- Cognitive impairment
- Brittle or weak bones
- Has fallen multiple times

INDEPENDENT LABORATORY TEST RESULTS
Our Secure brand hip protectors have been tested to determine if they reduce the force below the fracture point in the event of a fall. The pads were tested by Collision and Injury Dynamics, Inc., headquartered in El Segundo, CA. Visit www.ci-dynamics.com.
The hip fracture threshold of an elderly person is 3100N (+/- 1200N). The average force of the left and right Secure hip pads was 1366 N and 1531 N respectively. The tailbone pad was 1841N. All pads reduced the force associated with a fall below the threshold fracture point.
